So every sound has a form attached to it. Similarly, every form has a sound attached to it. So the sound is called mantra, the form is referred to as yantra; the technique of using these two things together is called tantra.

Tantra literally means 'technology'. Technology is designed to create what you want. Physical technologies are all about creating physical situations the way we want them, and when human minds try to create what they want, they will ask for many things…

Tantra essentially focused on making an intelligence beyond one's present capabilities available. In yoga, it is known as tantra yoga; learning to use your body, mind and energies as instruments of life so that it becomes available to a much higher possibility.”

Author Mary Furlong, expert on aging trends and technology, explores the changing lives of the baby boom generation in her new book Turning Silver Into Gold. According to Furlong the boomers were not ready for aging, but are not trying to take full advantage of it. Regarding sex, according to a 2004 AARP study, "More than half the respondents [adults aged 45 and up] said sexual activity is critical to a good relationship and that a satisfying sexual relationship is important to quality of life" and she further points out that "(Baby boomers) are becoming more inquisitive and experimental," she writes. "They are joining the mile high club for the first time, having sex play in exotic locations, making love nests before the fireplace or in the treehouse, and discovering sex toys. ... They are using books, music, yoga, erotica, massage, and videos to help them reach a heightened sensuality."

In general, Tantra has always been a householder tradition. As far as I know, there were no Tantrik ashrams or Tantrik monastics until modern times. Some Tantrik adepts have lived or wandered about on their own. But historically and today, we find that Tantrik Gurus often have husbands or wives, consorts, "significant others," and/or children. Whether we are talking about the Tantra of the ancient villages of India, the Tantra that was appropriated and refined by Brahmin masters from the 8th-12th century in Kashmir, or modern day Tantrik Gurus and practitioners worldwide, we are largely talking about people leading active lives in the everyday world…

For the Tantrik sannyasin householder, every activity is an offering of self to Self, whether raising kids, doing the dishes, singing kirtan, or working at a job. This is the attitude to be held in every moment. One tastes dispassionately whatever arises. One recognizes everyone and every situation that arises as none other than the expression of the primordial, natural state. One continually remembers one's nondifference from that.

For this reason, the path of the Tantrik sannyasin householder is a path of direct realization. Far from being an easier way for folks of the Kali Yuga, it is the most rigorous way. Even while engaged in distracting activities, one continually remembers, recognizes, and consciously embodies the groundlessness of life.

This is the path of unconditional availability to the life process. Or, as we say in the nondual traditions, one takes the fruit as the path.”
